In view of the rapid spread of the Omikron variant of the coronavirus, Hungary has decided to administer a fourth vaccination dose to its population. All those who wish “will be able to receive a fourth dose on medical advice,” the head of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s cabinet announced yesterday.
On Thursday, authorities reported more than 9,200 new infections within 24 hours. More than 40,000 people have died in the country as a result of CoV infection since the pandemic began. In Hungary, about 60 percent of the 9.8 million population has been vaccinated at least twice so far.
Orban has been repeatedly criticized for his lax handling of the pandemic. One of the few measures currently in place is a mask requirement in public transport and enclosed spaces, but it is hardly followed.
New high number of infections in Germany
The number of new CoV infections reported to the German Robert Koch Institute within one day has exceeded the threshold of 90,000 cases for the first time. German health offices reported 92,223 cases in 24 hours, according to RKI data released this morning.
The number exceeded 80,000 cases for the first time only on Wednesday. The 7-day incidence per 100,000 population also now peaked at 470.6.
